It's all in the details

When I build a project, I work the way I have since working with watercolor. With watercolor and paper, you start boxing things out with a thin pencil. You refine things as you go, building in detail and adding color. I describe it as working from a broad brush to a fine brush.

In digital art, initially, I’ll mass out your structure using primitive shapes. Think of this as a broad brush. I’ll then add more information, get approval, and continue to add details; this would be a fine brush. Most will have stopped once the basic model is built; the extra detail is usually missing, which is critical in perfecting an architectural rendering.

You perfect with imperfections!
— Bobby Parker

In the real world, nothing is perfect; everything has imperfections. If I am working on an interior and placing stools along a kitchen island. I try to think like someone staging an interior space for a photoshoot or an open house, so I line the stools up. I try to space things correctly, but then I slightly rotate each stool, barely moving them in/out and back/forth, so things are imperfect.

Exteriors, everything has an imperfection. I miter all corners so light hits the edges. Ground always has an uneven grade and is never totally flat. I also try to think like a photographer when pulling my camera views. I use real-world camera settings, and I try to frame my shots. Balancing lighting is essential, and so is composition.

One tail-tail sign of working with a professional is everything is subtle. You don’t know why the image looks good, but you know it does. Nothing is over the top, which tends to look tacky and unprofessional. Ludwig Mies van der Roh said it best when saying Less is more.

Less is more.
— Ludwig Mies van der Roh

My client never sees their final image unless I have put it aside for at least a day so that I can come back to it with a fresh eye. I squint, flip the image back and forth, look at it in black and white, and even see it as a tiny thumbnail. These are all tricks of the trade I learned from hand drawing. I would venture to say that most architectural illustrators today have never drawn by hand.

Here are some grayscale renderings showing the detail I put into my images. I work on small and mammoth homes, like this mammoth example home, all get the same detail.

IMG_1066.JPG
IMG_1067.JPG
IMG_1068.JPG

The model is about half of the work. After the model is built and all the details have been added, I make the best textures possible. These are not things I can grab from the web for free: low-resolution and not tiling. Each material is custom-created, with many layers. All the geometry gets proper UVWs, which means all the grains go the correct way. Each material has a specular map (shininess or reflectivity), a glossy map (map will control how reflective a surface is), a normal map (faking the lighting of bumps and dents), a bump map (simulates small surface displacements), and a displacement map (create the illusion of depth).

Above is a mammoth house in grayscale, and below are some of my smallest houses with colors and materials. Like cooking with the best ingredients for a feast, having the right amount of detail in the model and materials gives your eye a feast to enjoy.

Modern-Style House Rendering

This modern-style house is unique, and I am still determining the design. I didn’t design it; I just illustrated it for the designer. This version is my take on the house. As the designer scoped, the house has a two-toned roof, brick in-laid pavers between concrete driveway parts, and some green and teal. I will not share that one because the composition wasn’t to my taste, so I worked more on it, and here it is. Since the design is a little out there, I tried to tame it down with some monochrome colors and adjusted the composition to work better, with better lighting and camera angle.

Finding the Picture

Most, if not all, projects have a budget or some cost restrictions. Usually, my clients want to show as much as they can in one view without considering composition, light, shadow, or a focal point.

I structure my quotes so that multiple views can be chosen. Most illustrators have a flat fee, which means if you want the back of your house illustrated, it'll cost the same as the front—a second view of the front, the same price as the initial view. My fees are structured, so if you want the back of your house illustrated, since I already did the front, working out the details and colors, it'll take less work, which means less money so that you can allocate some money for some lovely vignettes. I have found that people still try to save money and not give that extra money to some beautiful vignettes or hero shots, which is too bad. The hero shots are what will sell your project.

Have you ever seen the cover of a set of construction documents? What do you see? You know, an isometric, with the camera high, showing the entire structure. This is OK; they are construction documents. However, they are not OK if you want something beautifully eye-pleasing.

Have you ever watched a professional architectural or landscape photographer work? They will sit for hours for that perfect light. When I go out taking photos, my hobby is to find a picture. That light can fall perfectly through the trees on just one flower, which is magical; I found the picture!

When creating an architectural rendering, I virtually walk the model with a virtual camera and lens, looking for the picture. I move the sun, raise the camera, lower the camera, and move the sun some more. It is always tricky when I am put in a box, being told the exact view, which people will only know what will work if someone spends the time walking the site. Foreground, middle ground, background, subtle depth of field, and some atmospherical atmosphere are all used to tell a story.

Most people, even people in architecture, need help understanding photography, composition, light and shadow, or even storytelling. There are rules and rules to be broken, but you can only break them if you know them. A professional can tell an amateur's work right away. You never put down an amateur because you can break their spirit. We were all amateurs at one point, but an amateur is easy to see.

It can take longer to find the picture than to build the model. However, making the model should be where the art starts, not when the project is completed.

Facebook memories are an excellent way to see things that were once worth posting. Here are some hero shots that I came across today, which initiated this post. I did these a few years ago for a client who understood the importance of finding the picture.

Material Study Rendering

What an excellent case study for an architectural rendering. The architect's client couldn't decide on stone or all brick, so he directed his client to me. It was a wise investment to commission an illustrator to illustrate both options so a decision could be made confidently.

Which one do you like?
